This project involves a minimal architectural intervention to prepare the necessary space for a pop-up ramen shop within a commercial facility at the KaDeWe Food Court in Berlin. Within this environment—layered with accumulated Western design elements—the temporary appearance of a Japanese restaurant offers Berliners an experience outside their everyday lives, akin to a kind of festival. At Japanese festivals, rows of food stalls bring color and vibrancy to the occasion. Yet these stalls are temporary structures that vanish the following day—a fleeting condition in which exhilaration and a quiet sense of loss seem to coexist.
Rather than pursuing an architectural approach that creates permanence through fixed construction, this project sought to create a space that emerges only within a limited span of time—one that embraces the delicate transience of materials such as aluminum and wood, the shifting expressions of the noren curtains, and the behavior of the people who pass through. It is an attempt to capture, as spatial experience, both the exhilaration of a festival and the fleeting impermanence that will eventually be lost.
